The Sovereign

Located in Southbank, Melbourne’s iconic art precinct, The Sovereign’s local demographic was a key design inspiration or driver for the building to aesthetically reflect it’s location.
Distinct architectural gestures commencing from the entry portico and transitioning through to the common lobbies was integral to maintain visual appeal, crucially maintaining a pragmatic nature for what is a building predominately populated with owner occupiers. The introduction of folded forms enveloping the existing building creates a strong, identifiable street presence through the use of materiality, architecture, lighting and signage. A nod to the leafy surroundings, such as the Royal Botanic Gardens, will see the integration of planting , ambient lighting and subdued materials aims to achieve a boutique appeal.

Materiality had a strong influence on the design concept, with perforated metal, marble & metallic combinations intended to envelope the facade & internal entry, and a lift car upgrade has also been included in the scope.
